The very best way to protect yourself from malware and viruses... For free!

We all know that you get what you pay for... But when it comes to protecting your computer, you can do a pretty good job with ZERO money.

There are so many antivirus programs out there.  Many of these companies are great at marketing, but that doesn’t mean they protect your computer.  We continuously research the best products on the market and can give you the inside track on what is the best solution as of today!

To be safe, you need three things:

1. A good content filter: Keeps you from touching malware to begin with (Think of it like your skin). I’m not talking about a firewall.
2. A good anti-malware solution: This, hopefully, will kill the infection if it gets past your skin (Think of it like your antibodies and white blood cells).
3. Good browsing habits: This will reduce the chances that you find bad infections, or that you get tricked into giving authorization for the infections to go past your content filter and past your anti-malware software.

Don’t under estimate the value of any of these. They are all equally important.

Ok, so first the free content filter: OpenDNS
This service will allow you to block the vast majority of all malware-deploying websites. In fact, it ALONE can reduce your chances of getting an infection by up to 50%.

Now the super-good (and free!) antivirus: BitDefender
This software requires you make an account, but it is totally worth it. As far as free antivirus goes, it is very solid.

Lastly, good browsing habits: How to browse the internet safely in eight simple steps (from AVG.com)
Even though we don’t recommend AVG antivirus, this is a great little list of important things to look out for. Also, just Google “safe browsing habits” and you will find many excellent pages full of insightful information that will keep you safe.
