One of the most interesting projects I have been involved in recently is building a storage server for shop work. We realized that to be extra safe with customer data, we needed to “snap an image” of any computer we were working on … what this means for you is that we can now take a complete backup of almost any computer that comes into our shop for service. We have found that many times, viruses can damage parts of window irreparably (or the removal process does). There are times when we transfer data between PCs we may miss something. We have also had situations where a seemingly healthy hard drive failed catastrophically in the middle of an unrelated service. The only issue is that images are HUGE!
This new storage server has 24TB of redundant storage. This is 24,000 GB!! Most computers come with anywhere from 500 GB to 1000 GB. This server protects you against damage caused by these types of failures. It allows us to look for missing files that existed when we started service, or even recover the entire computer back to the way it was before service.
Our policy now is to make an image backup of every computer that comes to the shop. We store that image securely on our storage server so that in of the above events occurs, or anything else that may affect your data, we have -if at all possible- a backup of the entire machine to rely on. We retain this backup for 30 days, so that you have plenty of time to see how things are going and get back to us if there are issues.
Hardware and software are replaceable. If we accidentally drop a laptop and break it, it can be repaired or replaced easily. If something damages data that is not backed up somewhere it is irreplaceable. We want to do our best to insure that your critical data is safe, whether it is precious family photos, important business records, death star plans (better fix that exhaust port), or your awesome collection of live concert recordings.
